Hospital pedestrian access improvements on the way
A plan to refurbish the pavements in the neighbourhoods surrounding Elche general hospital is being undertaken by the council with a budget of €300,000.
As well as repairing the ones that are in bad condition, the project will also improve accessibility, ‘in the same way as they are currently doing along Calle Avet, opposite the hospital’, explained councillor for maintenance Héctor Díez. This will improve access to the bus stop and taxi rank at the junction, he noted. “These are important interventions, most of them asked for by residents and they will be carried out from this month until the summer of 2020,” said the councillor.
City hall is also working on another contract to renovate pavements, for which €1 million will be invested in the municipality’s rural districts and another million for the city centre.
"This is being put out to tender at the moment and will be carried out next summer," he added.
THE CEREMONIAL cutting of the first bunch of dates of the harvest took place in Elche on Friday.
It was organised by the cooperative of growers, Dateelx and took place in the rural district of La Hoya, where numerous members of the public, council members and other distinguished guests came to celebrate the occasion, including the Greek consul in the city.
“Elche would not be what it is without the families of the local countryside who continue to grow and use date palms and other traditional local products,” stated councillor for rural development Felip Sánchez.
He encouraged all residents of the municipality and neighbouring areas to ‘put dates on their tables’, in order to ensure the survival of the date palm plantations.
Afterwards they were able to enjoy a lunch in which the star ingredient was dates from palms grown in the municipality’s Palmeral plantations, which are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
