Consumers’ office merry go round continues

- By Dave Jones djones@cbnews.es

THE MUNICIPAL consumers’ rights office (OMIC) in Torrevieja has been moved back to La Mata.

The office – which helps residents resolve a range of problems relating to consumer issues as well as taking up the cudgels on their behalf with recalcitrant companies – has a history of being transferred to different locations by successive councils.

Traditionally it was located in Torrevieja town centre, before a previous Partido Popular (PP) council moved it to the newly-constructed town hall building in La Mata at the beginning of this decade.

When the coalition came to power in 2015 they took the decision to transfer the office back to the town and it was eventually given a home at La Plasa market, close to Paseo Vista Alegre on the seafront.

However, the PP have now decided to move the OMIC back to La Mata.

Councillor for consumers Antonio Vidal said the office in the market building was too small and ‘not adequate for the function which the workers offer’.

He noted that the OMIC is now operating from the first floor of La Mata town hall in an area which is ‘much more accessible’.

“They will be able to offer an optimum service for residents in this location,” he said.

Sr Vidal noted that this had been an electoral promise of the PP.

He added that OMIC staff help hundreds of residents every year to resolve their complaints. The former coalition council stated that they had moved the office back to Torrevieja because residents had stated that it was ‘too far away’ in La Mata.
