Goals galore

-

Last Friday night, Leicester City went goal-crazy, winning their Premier match at Southampton 9-0.

This equalled the PL’s biggest-ever win, achieved by Manchester United against Ipswich in 1995, while at the same time it was the biggest away victory ever in 131 years of top-flight League football.

It comfortably eclipsed Manchester United 8-1 PL victory at Nottingham Forest in 1995 and for the record, it was also Saints’ biggest-ever defeat in all competitions, following 8-0 League hammerings at Tottenham in 1936 and Everton in 1971.

Not only that, Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez became only the second pair of team-mates to score hat-tricks in the same PL match. Indeed, Perez netted a treble for Newcastle against Saints last season, and 15 years ago Robert Pires and Jermaine Pennant were hat-trick heroes for Arsenal, also against Southampton!

It must be said that Saints played with 10 men for over 80 minutes against Leicester and next up is a PL game against Manchester City tomorrow!

■ Sixty-five years ago. in 1954-55, the two First Division games between Leicester City and WBA produced 19 goals. City lost 6-4 away before winning 6-3 at home. This is a record for most goals scored in League games involving the same two teams in the same season.

■ Considered by many as the world’s best player and by some as the greatest footballer of all time, Lionel Messi last week, scored his 700th career goal for club and country.

His latest effort, against Eibar, was his 616th goal for Barcelona, 421 in 456 La Liga games. He’s also netted 84 times in 159 international games at various levels for Argentina.
