October’s dry spell ends

Alcohol free month raises cash for kids

- By Jack Troughton jtroughton@cbnews.es

THREE big-hearted Bay Radio stalwarts went on the wagon for ‘Sober October’ to raise €1,000 for youngsters cared for at the Preventorio de Gandia

The Jávea-based radio station runs a ‘stand alone’ charity account for the home and Kate, Kal and Dougie gave up alcohol for the month to help the children.

Listeners along Spain’s East coast responded by backing the trio with sponsorship to help reach the target and also donated €25 ‘golden tickets’ to give the opportunity for them to enjoy a night off from the strict alcohol-free regime.

Bay Radio supplies essentials for the Preventorio - currently home to 54 children aged three to 14. This includes providing gas for heating and hot water, toiletries, clothing and also birthday presents. Every December the station hosts a special Christmas party in Javea for the kids with the essential seasonal specials.

Kate said: “It was my idea, all for the children. Dougie said he would do it and Kal agreed...if he could have a golden ticket when he was watching Leeds United.

“It was quite hard at times but thinking about the children helped push us through; a lot of people do a lot of stuff for the home and we wanted to help kick-start the season of goodwill this year.”

Bay Radio now has an independent website - www.itsallaboutthechildren.es - telling the story of the children’s home, the carers, teachers and people who have made a difference to life at the Preventorio.

And this year’s Christmas party for the youngsters is being held on December 10 - the radio station invites donations of presents before December 6. It is requested they are new and wrapped, marked for a boy or girl and the age they are appropriate for.
