Baking for MABS

- By Irena Bodnarec

A coffee morning held on Sunday at Bar Café Olé in Jalon raised an astounding €1,200 for MABS Cancer Support!

The event was organised by Lesley Carslake having been inspired by the response to the McMillan coffee morning in the UK and wanting to do something similar for cancer support here in Spain. Many of the delicious bakes were made by a group of local expat ladies collectively known as ‘The Honey Badgers’, who organise trip out and are there to support one another through life’s journey. Although normally shut on a Sunday, owner Debbie Askwith didn’t hesitate when asked to host the coffee morning.

Local businesses were so incredibly generous donating prizes for the raffle, with numerous bottles of wine and spirits from the nearby bodega, hair & beauty vouchers, restaurant meals, chocolates and a delicious family size cake. Helper Jo sat outside and made it her mission that no-one managed to pass inside without coughing up their €5, which entitled them to a coffee and generous slice of homemade cake, served by Dawn – the only difficulty was deciding which one to go for. But she was genuinely touched by people’s generosity, none more so than when regular ‘Scottish Rob’ handed her a €50 note on his way out to put into the pot! MABS President Jacqueline Phillips who came to support the event made a short speech following the raffle, thanking everyone for their hard work in making it such a success and raising a terrific sum for MABS Cancer Support Fundación.
