Super soaring send off

- By Jack Troughton

Guy Fawkes enjoyed a grand finale as a traditional bonfire night party closed a chapter on 16 years of charity fund raising in a Costa Blanca garden.

Hosts Darrell and Sally Clayton brought the curtain down on a run of over 30 events at their home in Gata de Gorgos last Sunday evening - marked by lighting the blue touch paper and lighting up the November sky with fireworks.

The party raised €1,600 for Freemasons’ charities and will be donated to the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia to support good causes.

And 100 guests enjoyed a barbeque supplied by Jalon’s Black Apple Restaurant with music by party band Gatecrash, aided and abetted by musical couple Ian and Gill Henry and sax player Frank Abrams.

The Claytons have decided to downsize and bid farewell to a terraced garden that forms a natural auditorium.

“We have been here 16 years and have staged around 30 events in the garden - musical theatre nights, classical and rock concerts, and our annual fireworks party,” said Darrell.

“Every event raises money for charity - we decided to limit the tickets for this party but we normally raise between €2,000 and €3,000; the biggest bash was for 260 people.

“We have decided to downsize but this is a fantastic send off; fireworks accompanied by the classical sounds of Tchaikovsky - it is a superb finale!”

Darrell and Sally thanked a team of helpers and local businesses for their support in sponsoring the night and donating raffle prizes.
