England’s 1,000th internatio­nal

Next Thursday (November 14) England will play their 1,000th full internatio­nal football match when they meet Montenegro in a 2020 European qualifier at Wembley.

England’s full record to date reads as follows:

* These include friendly, play-off, festival and representa­tive matches, while games involving penalty shoot-outs are included in the general competitio­n stats.

England’s first internatio­nal was played on 30 November 1872 when a crowd of 4,000 witnessed a 0-0 draw with Scotland at the Glasgow’s Partick cricket ground.

■ England’s first home game followed in March 1873 when they beat Scotland 4-2 at The Oval. India-born KenyonSlan­ey had the pleasure of scoring his country’s first internatio­nal goal in front of 3,000 spectators.

■ England suffered defeat for he first time in March 1874 when they lost 2-1 to Scotland in another game at the Partick cricket ground.

■ England’s 50th internatio­nal ended in a 2-2 draw with Ireland in Belfast in March 1894.

■ Fifteen years later, in March 1909, their 100th internatio­nal resulted in a 2-0 win over Wales at The City Ground, Nottingham.

■ So far, of England’ 999 games, 442 have been at home, 450 away and 107 on neutral grounds.

■ England’s two biggest internatio­nal wins have both been against Ireland - 13-0 in Belfast in February 1882 with Aston Villa’s Howard Vaughton scoring five goals, and 13-2 at Roker Park, Sunderland in February 1899 when George Smith (4) and James Settle (3) both netted hat-tricks.

■ Hungary inflicted upon England their heaviest defeat, winning 7-1 in Budapest in May 1954 – six months after the Magyars had won 6-3 at Wembley.

■ So far 1,244 players have won a full cap for England, the last being Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings.

■ Goalkeeper Peter Shilton holds the record for most caps won for England with 125; Wayne Rooney (120) has won the most as an outfield player – and he’s also netted the most goals, 53.

■ Billy Wright and Bobby Moore share the record of skippering England most times at senior level – 90.
