Court refuses bail for suspect

A 40-YEAR-old Icelandic man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his stepfather to death and then trying to kill his own mother in a villa on a Torrevieja urbanisation.

According to state news agency EFE, the incident occurred at around 03.00 on Sunday at the property on Calle Cruz del Sur in Los Balcones.

EFE reported that the 66year-old victim, also from Iceland, had suffered stab wounds.

A press release from Alicante Guardia Civil explained that a neighbour called the force to report a possible burglary after seeing a person jumping over the wall to gain access to the property.

A butane gas bottle had then been used to smash a window.

“When officers arrived the door was opened by an Icelandic woman,” noted a Guardia Civil spokesman.

“Her husband had wounds to his side and back and was bleeding profusely.

“The officers tried to staunch the wounds while waiting for paramedics to arrive but they were unable to save his life.”

According to the spokesman, the suspect had tried to stab his mother when she tried to leave her home.

He fled the property before the Guardia Civil arrived but officers found him outside with his clothes covered in blood.

They also discovered the knife used in the attack in the stepson’s car, according to the spokesman.

The Guardia Civil investigation was taken over by a Torrevieja judge, who oversaw the removal of the victim’s body on Sunday.

A spokesman for the Regional Supreme Court (TSJ) reported that the suspect was refused bail and remanded in prison by a Torrevieja court on Tuesday.

He noted that he is being investigated for a crime of homicide and for attempted homicide ‘allegedly against his own mother’.

Costa Blanca News visited the crime scene on Monday and found that the property – which stands close to Torrevieja hospital – has been sealed off by the Guardia Civil under instructions from the judge.

According to news agencies in Iceland, the suspect has a previous conviction for setting fire to an occupied home and is also connected to drug smuggling.
