On January 8 we played our first match of 2020 after our Christmas and New Year break. We were fishing section E3 of the Rio Jucar.

Due to the number of steps down to the river and the relative difficulty of the fishing platforms, some of our members prefer not to fish here. Therefore there were only seven members scheduled to take part on this day, but one failed to arrive, leaving six to fish the match.

We had hoped to find an improvement in the colour of the water but it still remains very cloudy with a greyish tinge to it. We do not know what is causing this. We were however heartened by the fact that another angler who was already fishing in this area landed two fish whilst we pegged out and the draw took place. The temperature was eight degrees and a light mist hung over the surface of the water.

The match began at 10.00 but it was a very slow start. It was to be almost two hours before the first fish was landed. It was taken By Graham Sewell from the nearside on an oozing pineapple boilie. Shortly after, a couple were landed from the far side but then all went quiet again with the exception of Graham who landed another from the nearside. As the afternoon progressed there were a few fish topping on the far side and in the middle but very few bites were to be had. Frank Povey hooked into a good fish but failed to land it. Graham landed two more from the nearside but no-one else could manage anything from this area. Late in the match Graham caught his only fish from the far side, quickly followed by Frank Povey landing one.

When the match ended at 15.00 two members were left with empty nets and only Graham had had a reasonable day. The results were as follows; 1st Graham Sewell (Sooty) Peg 7 (E3/20) 5 fish 11.70 kilos.

2nd Frank Povey (The Poacher) Peg 5 (E3/16)1 fish 2.53 kilos, 3rd Jacques Janssen (Special Corn) Peg 2 (E3/7)2 fish 2.35 kilos, 4th Ray Turvey (Camouflage) Peg 1 (E3/5)2 fish 2.13 kilos.

In total, 10 carp were caught for a total weight of 18.70 kilos.

We are a very friendly club and are always happy to welcome new members. Anyone without match fishing experience will be given assistance and advice from our more experienced members.
