Applications open for Ruta de las Fortalezas

- By Barry Wright bwright@cbnews.es

THE 11th Ruta de las Fortalezas athletic endurance test takes place in and around Cartagena on Saturday, March 28.

This year’s event will see participants have a maximum of 12 hours to complete a 50km course through the streets and surrounding countryside of Cartagena.

Participants can opt to run, walk or both.

The main event starts from Plaza Héroes de Cavite at 08.05 and finishes at the Escuela de Infantería de Marina.

In addition to the main race there are also youth and children’s contests.

The youth race gets underway at 09.00 on March 28, whilst the children’s event takes place at 18.00 the day before (March 27).

The event always attracts more applications than there are places and, in order to accommodate more participants, this year the maximum amount of participants has been increased to 4,000.

Registration is €32 for the main test, €15 for the youth event and €10 for the children, and is open from Monday, January 23 until Thursday, February 2.

All applications received during this time will be entered in a draw for places.

As a rule around 7,500 applications are received for the event, which can only host just over half that number of athletes.

At the presentation, Cartagena mayoress Ana Belén Castejón highlighted the ‘difficulty and beauty of this competition that passes through the municipality’s unrivalled coastal landscapes, as well as the architectural and historical heritage of the old town’.

The Ruta de las Fortalezas is organised by the Spanish navy in collaboration with Cartagena city hall.

Full details including registration information is available at www.rutadelasfortalezas.es.
