Eddie's Final Whistle

-

2nd B Division, Group 3

Match day 24 - February 9 Orihuela CF 1 – 0 Hercules CF Orihuela took all three points from their local derby game against Alicante side, Hercules. The only goal of the game arrived in the 35th minute after a shot from Orihuela player, Solano, took a deflection and flew passed Falcon, in the Hercules goal. Up to this point, it had been a very even match. But the goal inspired the home side who were able to hold on to take all three very valuable points. The result certainly makes things even tighter at the foot of the table where AE Prat are still in 20th (last) position with 20 points, after their excellent away win at Andorra and Orihuela are one place off the bottom with 21 points and now the same points total (21) as both CF Badalona (18th position) and Hercules CF (17th position). These four teams will, should they finish in the bottom four at the end of the season, be relegated.

CD Castellon 1 – 0 RCD Español B These two sides are being spoken about as potentially finishing the season in the play off places and on what we saw in this game, those observations could be very true. This match could have gone either way. Both sides came into the game in decent form and both in or around the top places.

After a storming start which saw them create a good number of chances, Castellon appeared to take a step back and allowed Español to take the initiative, which they most certainly did although neither side could make that all important breakthrough..

The second half was more of the same until the 62nd minute. Español player Nico dribbled into the Castellon area and was brought down for a penalty. However, the same player took the spot kick but Castellon keeper, Alvaro Campos, produced a magnificent save to keep the scores level.

All this before Castellon's new signing, Juanto, gave his side the lead with a goal in the 68th minute - the only goal of the game giving his side all three points against one of their direct rivals for a promotion play off place. The win moves Castellon up into third position. They now have 43 points and are only one point behind Sabadell in top spot and FC Barcelona B who are both on 44 points. Castellon are two points above the fourth placed side, Cornella with Español, after this defeat, dropping down to 6th position with 38 points. Valencia CF Mestalla 2 – 2 UE Olot - The Valencia CF reserve side, Mestalla, managed to salvage a point from this game against a UE Olot side who are fighting it out at top for one of the four play off places.

This game started as expected. No surprise when the visitors raced into a two goal lead inside the first 35 minutes. At this point, all was going as expected and Mestalla looked dead and buried.

However, the second half was a very different affair. Whatever the half time chat was, it certainly worked for Valencia Mestalla as they not only managed to equalise, but could and should have won the game.

But the single point does little to help their league position. They are still in the relegation places and are now in 16th place which is the relegation play out place. They have 23 points from their 24 matches played and are two points above the automatic relegation places and three points below the safety places.

On the other side of the coin, Catalan side UE Olot are in ninth position with 34 points. They are now seven points outside the play off places and realistically too far to mount a serious challenge.

UE Llagostera 1 – 3 Atletico Levante UD - Another excellent win for Atletico Levante who with this away win at Llagostera, are up into 11th position with 32 points and look very likely to end the season, unless something drastically goes wrong for them, in a comfortable mid table position.

FC Barcelona B 2 – 3 Villarreal CF B - The Villarreal reserves got themselves back in the hunt for a playoff place after a superb win, away at joint league leaders, FC Barcelona B.

The visitors raced into a 0-2 lead before Barcelona B demonstrated why they are one of the top sides in this group, by equalising. However, Villarreal once again took the lead and held on for the three points.

This victory moves Villarreal up into fifth position, one place outside the promotion Play Off places. They have 39 points and are just two points behind fourth placed UE Cornella, who dropped two points after their 1-1 draw at the weekend.

CF La Nucia 1 – 0 CE Sabadell FC - A much needed draw for La Nucia who with this victory, their 8th of the season, move up into a comfortable mid table position in 10th place with 32 points from 24 matches played. CE Sabadell arrived at the Camilo Cano Olimpic Stadium as joint league leaders and confident they could add to their 13 victories this season. However, they left La Nucia empty handed after Aguero scored an 87th minute penalty which gave the home side all three points. Despite this defeat, they stay as joint leaders and are on 44 points.

3rd Division, Group 6

CD Alcoyano secured their 18th win of the season to increase their lead at the top of this group to 13 points over second placed Intercity San Juan. Alcoyano are on 60 points (and still unbeaten this season), whilst Intercity San Juan are on 47 points as they could only manage a draw away at Paterna.

UD Alzira are in third position having won their match at the weekend 1-2 away at CD Acero. Alzira have 42 points and are two points ahead of fourth placed Atzeneta UE who dropped two points after their 0-0 home draw against Atletico Saguntino, are on 40 points. Villarreal C (5th position with 39 points) and CD Roda (6th position with 37 points) are the two sides chasing the top four.

At the bottom of the table in this group, UD Beniganim are almost certainly relegated after suffering their 19th defeat of the season. They only have 13 points from their 24 matches played having won just four matches all season. Worse still is, apart from being bottom of the league (20th position) they are 13 points outside the first safety position which looks impossible for them to reach. Relegation after just one season at this level looks inevitable and will come as no surprise..

CD Acero are one place above them, in 19th position. They have 21 points and are two points behind 18th placed Silla CF who are in the final relegation position, despite gaining a point from their away draw at Hercules B in Alicante. Silla CF are three points behind the first of the safety places.
