The latest coronaviru­s figures for the Valencia region show an improvemen­t on last week

ENCOURAGIN­G figures on the coronaviru­s outbreak in the Valencia region were published yesterday (Thursday) by the health department.

The number of people being treated for the virus in hospital continues to fall – down from 1,344 in Wednesday’s report to 1,247 yesterday.

One of the largest falls in recent weeks of patients in intensive care was also recorded – down by 27 – from 301 on Wednesday to 274 yesterday.

Councillor for health Ana Barceló noted yesterday that 342 people had recovered from the disease in the Valencia region in the previous 24 hours – up by 51 – with 266 reported yesterday.

The total number of people who have recovered from the coronaviru­s in the region is now 3,702.

A total of 191 new cases were reported – 21 fewer than the 211 which came to light on Wednesday. This takes the total number in Valencia region to 9,615.

In the Valencia region the number of deaths of patients with the coronaviru­s has gone down by nine from Wednesday’s figure – with 27 recorded in 24 hours.

This takes the death toll to 972 since the coronaviru­s health crisis started.

A total of 323 elderly people have died in care homes in the Valencia region. Sra Barceló noted that 24 care homes have been placed under direct supervisio­n of the regional health department.

Speaking about the new cases yesterday, she explained that 26 had come to light in Castellón

province, 23 in Alicante province and 142 in Valencia.

Of these, 1,218 are in Castellón province, 3,401 in Alicante and 4,991 in Valencia, with five unassigned cases.

Sra Barceló added that they have received 3,246 phone calls to the 900 362 236 number, which has been set up so people in ‘at-risk’ groups or with symptoms of coronaviru­s can ask for medicines to be delivered to their homes.

Local figures

The regional health department is now publishing records for each local health department in the Valencia region.

Orihuela area health department (Vega Baja hospital) reported a total of 111 coronaviru­s cases on Wednesday, with 10 deaths since the outbreak began.

Torrevieja healthcare area has confirmed 340 cases and 37 deaths since the outbreak began.

Elche-Crevillent­e department has registered six fatalities and 130 cases – and Elche general hospital has reported 253 cases, with eight deaths.

The Marina Baixa health department (including Villajoyos­a hospital, has 621 cases confirmed and 85 deaths since the outbreak began.

Dénia (Marina Alta) has 190 cases and 16 deaths.

Gandía (La Safor) has confirmed 190 cases and 20 have died.

The Alcoy area has suffered the highest fatality rate in the region – 102 deaths in total, with 366 patients recorded as having the virus.

Outside the provincial capitals, the highest contagion rate is in the Marina Baixa, with 621 cases and 85 deaths.

Murcia

In Murcia region 186 patients are being treated in hospitals, with 36 of them in intensive care. A total of 111 people in the region have died with Covid-19 since the outbreak started.

A total of 591 people have recovered from the disease in Murcia.
