Human waste matter washed up on landmark beach in Moraira

THE PRESDIENT and lawyer of the association ‘SOS Moraira’, Javier Gimeno Ortega has revealed that human waste matter has been pouring into the sea at El Portet bay in Moraira for ‘practically a month’.

In a harsh statement from the association, it was asserted that: “These faecal leaks, which are harmful to health, pollute both the promenade that runs along the length of the beach and the sand itself, ultimately leading to the sea”.

According to SOS Moraira, the sewer outlet, located immediately adjacent to the beach, is constantly overflowing and spreading waste matter.

Teulada local police were notified of this incident by telephone on March 16 and were informed that the fault had been detected on March 12 . In addition to this, Teulada Moraira town hall was notified, through its web platform, ‘without receiving any response from the civil service Teulada.

Regarding this, SOS Moraira said: “On a daily basis, and at least on three or four occasions, patrols of the local police, the Guardia Civil and the municipal beach maintenance services drive their vehicles and cross the puddles of faecal waters as if they did not exist.

“There is no doubt that this is a serious fault on the part of authorities, who are not capable of providing minimum and basic services, such as cleaning, sanitation and maintenance even in times of quarantine. In addition, and last but not least, Teulada Moraira council is breaking the law with toxic, harmful, unhealthy and dangerous activities.”

The letter, written as a public complaint, concluded: “It should be remembered that this association has already launched a protest to return the beach to its natural state.”

Two years ago the association held a public demonstration to protest that replacement sand which had been laid following storms was damaging the sea bed and was ‘gravelly’.
