Partido Popular councillors at Jávea town hall have made a €1,000 donation to be equally divided between the two branches of Cáritas in the Marina Alta resort.
The five opposition councillors hope to encourage other people to help the cashstrapped charities based in the old town and the port.
It follows a plea for help from Cáritas struggling to help families in need as the economic effects of Covid-19 continue to bite.
Rosa Cardona, spokesperson for the PP in Jaáea, said people were living through difficult times and she and her colleagues “decided to do their bit” to help.
The money represents 70% of last month’s allowances made to four of the PP councillors; the fifth, who has not received the payment, added a personal contribution.
And the PP also sent a message of encouragement to the entire population highlighting the exemplary behaviour that the residents are displaying throughout the confinement.
