Covid-19 hit cities and care homes hardest in Valencia region

Regional government releases coronaviru­s impact figures per municipali­ty

LARGE cities and towns where Covid-19 cases spread in care homes have been the mosts affected areas by the virus in the Valencia region.

For the first time since the epidemic hit the region, the Valencia health department has released figures per municipali­ty at the weekend - a step avoided until now to avoid 'stigmatisi­ng' certain areas said regional president Ximo Puig.

Valencia city, as expected, reports the highest figure as 2,088 people have contracted the coronaviru­s since the first cases were reported earlier this year, of whom 242 have died.

Castellón city’s death toll to this date is of 42, behind Torrent (another care home case epicentre) that has reported 53.

In Alicante, the largest city in the province and Alcoy, where the virus hit care homes seriously, lead the sad list of deaths by Covid-19 in the province.

Until the weekend, Alicante city has seen 87 deaths and 867 cases reported to this date, the highest figures in the province. However second on the list of fatalities is Alcoy were serious outbreaks at care homes has seen the death toll reach 80 although ‘only’ 244 cases have been detected.

A total of 383 people have contracted Covid-19 in Benidorm of whom 66 died. Authoritie­s say the initial ‘floating’ population of elderly people on vacation in the area accounted for many of the cases and deaths over the first weeks.

Torrevieja, has reported 39 deaths and 255 cases so far, while Orihuela has reported 80 cases and six fatalities.

There had been 32 cases and eight deaths in Guardamar del Segura.

Elche has reported 396 cases with 15 deaths.

Further north Campello has reported 56 cases and five deaths,

Inland Relleu only had one case, but it resulted in death. Villajoyos­a (where the district hospital is located and numerous cases from outside the province have been reported) has seen 108 cases confirmed and 19 deaths.

Alfaz del Pi had reported 27 cases and four deaths, while in La Nucía there have been 38 cases and one death.

And in the Marina Alta, Calpe has reported 29 cases and three deaths, Jávea 20 cases and three deaths and Dénia 68 cases and six fatalities.

Only four cases and no deaths in Teulada/Moraira, however while only four cases have been reported in Benitachel­l, two of them resulted in death.

In Valencia province and Castellón provinces, towns such as Gandía (83 cases and six deaths), Villarreal (216 cases and 40 deaths) were also hit hard, but Torrent, where the virus affected several care homes reported 271 cases and 53 deaths.

Here are some of the figures reported in other Alicante, Vega Baja and Vinalopo areas not mentioned earlier:

- Pilar de la Horadada has reported 22 cases and two deaths

- Rojales 10 cases and two deaths

- Pilar 22 cases and two deaths - Dolores 15 cases and six deaths - Santa Pola 66 cases and five deaths - Almoradí 13 cases and two deaths - Villena 59 cases and seven deaths - Novelda 65 cases and 16 deaths - Muchamiel 31 cases and three deaths

- Petrer 85 cases and 11 deaths

Figures for some other towns in the Marina Alta and Marina Baix are as follows:

- Finestrat 15 cases 3 deaths

- Callosa d'En Sarria 66 casesand

eight deaths

- Altea 28 cases and four deaths

- Polop 7 cases and one death

- Benissa nine cases and two deaths - Pego two cases, no deaths

- Pedreguer 19 cases and four deaths - Ondara four cases, no deaths

- Gata de Gorgos three cases and no deaths

- El Verger five cases, no deaths

- Jalón one case and no deaths

- Els Poblets three cases and no

deaths.

- Orba once case and no deaths - Beniarbeig five cases, no deaths - Alcalalí one case, no deaths - Benidoleig three cases and no deaths - Ràfol d'Almúnia one case and no deaths

- Adsubia once and no deaths

- Vall d'Alcalà one case an no deaths. In the Marina Alta there have been no reported cases in Llíber, Parcent, Vall de Laguar, Sanet i Negrals, Senija, Vall de Gallinera, Benigembla, Murla, Castell de Castells, Benimeli, Sagra, Tormos or Vall D'Ebo.

- Oliva 18 cases and three deaths - Almassora 55 cases and three deaths - Lliria 39 cases and four deaths. - L'Eliana 45 cases and four deaths.
