THE controversial building of a beach bar and restaurant in the midst of a strip of Javea coastal homes stoked up new protests at the weekend with complaints over noise pollution.

As the Marina Alta town opened its doors to visitors with the easing of coronavirus crisis regulations, visitors and holiday home owners flocked back to the resort.

But the ongoing work at the commercial development triggered new protests and according to people living on Avenida Ultramar - which runs along the protected Muntanyar II beach from the Arenal to Cala Blanca - police arrived three times on Saturday answering complaints.

The site of the development was the last vacant plot on the coast and stands in a row of detached villas.

The new owners claim town hall planners gave the building the green light but councillors never ratified the plan.

And the issue sparked demonstrations and the formation of an action group by property owners - with residents petitioning the local authority; leading to allegations from the developers the town hall was bowing down to public pressure.

“The police came three times on Saturday after complaints about the noise - local police on one occasion and twice the Guardia Civil,” CBN was told. “Building went on all day; construction seems to be at a dizzying pace even though we believe it is unlicensed work.”
