A Potrait of Spain
The Almoravids
With the fall of Toledo in 1085 the rulers of the Taifas looked towards North Africa for help in the cause. At this time there was a powerful and radical Muslim kingdom called the Almoravids, who responded to the call and crossed over into the Iberian Peninsula to fight against the increasingly united Christian kingdoms.
There was a famous battle in Zalaca near Badajoz in 1086 in which Alfonso VI himself was defeated. In this battle the Almoravid fighters used the constant banging of drums to intimidate and disorientate the Christian fighters.
Unfortunately for the Moorish side, the Almoravid’s took the opportunity to go on to conquer the Taifas. The Almoravid were fundamentalists in their beliefs and following of the Koran and imposed much stricter rules of behaviour on the inhabitants who they considered to be lax in the devotion.
