LOCAL LOCKDOWNS TO BEAT FLARE-UPS

‘Selective confinement’ will be used to fight Covid-19

- By Dave Jones

REGIONAL governments are resorting to ‘local lockdowns’ to counter outbreaks of coronavirus when they occur.

Minister for health Salvador Illa said ‘selective confinement’ is preferred to a return to the state of emergency.

This could be in an apartment block, he noted, as occurred in Santander this week, where 80 residents have been ordered to remain in their homes

Sr Illa stated: “If an outbreak is detected – and we have to place a building, a business or a block of flats in quarantine – then it is the regional governments which will have the powers to do this, with the support of the health ministry.”

He noted that they are working to mitigate the effects of any possible ‘second wave’ of Covid-19 with safety measures such as the use of face masks, social distancing and hygiene.

Two flare-ups have been recorded in Valencia region, but neither has led to confinement of neighbourhoods or buildings. In Castellón city, 23 people have been affected, with seven new cases recorded on Wednesday – and three patients remain ‘active’ in Rafelbunyol in Valencia province.

A TOTAL of 16 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in the Valencia region on Wednesday but the regional government said the flare-ups were under control.

Councillor for health Ana Barceló noted that seven of the new cases were linked to an outbreak in Castellón city and two were in Rafelbunyol in Valencia province.

She noted that three people had also tested positive for Covid-19 in Alicante province.

The councillor added that there are 306 ‘active’ cases of coronavirus in Valencia region at the moment, according to their figures.

A total of 92 more patients were given the green light on Wednesday – and told that they have made complete recoveries from the virus.

The number of patients being treated for Covid-19 in hospital in the region continues to go down – last Wednesday (June 24) it was 64 and this Wednesday (July 1) it was 53, with seven patients in intensive care (down one on last week).

The figures for the three provinces show that there are six patients in hospital in Castellón (one in intensive care), 25 in Alicante (four in intensive care) and 22 in Valencia (two in intensive care).

A total of five more deaths from Covid-19 have been reported in the region in the last week, with the total now standing at 1,475.

Murcia region

A total of 35 people have coronavirus in Murcia region and a 98-year-old woman has died, according to the regional health authority. The victim lived in a village near Moratalla.

All the infected people have been told to remain in their homes and their close contacts are being monitored.

Most of the cases are related to three infected people who arrived from Bolivia at the beginning of June and ignored quarantine orders.

The authorities added that 10 of the new cases are workers from a fruit company in El Raal, which has been temporarily closed.
