Liverpool – Premiership Champions

Sports comments By Tony Matthews

Congratulations all round to Liverpool FC who last week were officially confirmed as the 2019-20 English Premiership League champions, without kicking a ball… this after rivals Manchester City lost 2-1 at Chelsea.

This is Liverpool’s first topflight League title triumph for 30 years - their 19th overall and they thoroughly deserved it, winning the Premiership in style with seven games remaining. And I must add that right now they are the reigning European Champions, FIFA World Club Champions, the UEFA Super Cup holders and of course, the Premier League champions.

Here are some interesting facts surrounding the Reds’ latest triumph…

■Since winning to the top prize back in season 1989-90 they have played 1,149 games – that’s 103,410 minutes (not including injury time) – out on the pitch. ■They have won 595 of those matches, scored 1,968 goals and gained a total of 2,075 points. ■The club itself (managers really) have spent £1.47 billion on players of whom 239 have been used by nine permanent managers.

■* Only five of the current first team squad of 27 players at Anfield were born when Liverpool last won the top-flight League championship. They are goalkeepers Adrián San Miguel de Castillo (born in 1987) and Andy Lonegran (1983), defender Dejan Lovren (1989), midfielder Adam Lallana (1988) and the versatile James Milner (1986).

■And Liverpool are the first team in history to win English football’s top Division in

June!

No doubt there are more records to come before the last ball is kicked in earnest in late July… and they could include most wins in a season, most points gained in a full campaign (Manchester City currently hold this record with 100 in 2017-18) and the biggest points gap between the champions and the runner’s-up.

Hearty congratulations once again to German boss man Jurgen Klopp and his ‘Merry Merseysiders’ on a job well done, very well done in fact.
