Promenade repair work set back

Work on Jávea's promenade will not begin until September

Já´ vea town hall has this week regretted not having its emblematic David Ferrer promenade on Arenal beach ready in time for the summer and asks for people’s understanding. Repairs on damage caused by Storm Gloria in January were set to commence when the Covid-19 crisis broke out and now has been postponed until after summer.

REPAIRS to the beach promenade named after tennis star David Ferrer - one of Jávea’s most famous sons - will not start until the end of the summer season.

Damaged in January’s notorious Storm Gloria, it was hoped that the work could be completed ahead of the annual influx of visitors to the Marina Alta resort.

Jávea town hall did take ‘emergency’ action to ensure the Paseo David Ferrer was made safe in the aftermath of the storm, and the resulting clean-up operation meant the area could be reopened within a week of the storm.

However, the scale of the remaining work, estimated to cost up to €200,000, meant that a contract would have to be put out to public tender.

It was hoped the two month procedure would be completed in time for the repairs to be carried out ahead of the high season, but the tender was suspended as a result of the Covid-19 state of emergencyso the repairs will not now be started until September.

The contract was awarded to Victor Tormo SL for €165,879 on May 7 - the first day it was legally possible - after the town hall made the job a ‘top priority’.

A council spokesman said it was also decided to postpone the work. “It was considered that the start of the high season was not compatible with such large scale work.”

He said it would have meant parts of the beach, promenade, and car park would have been fenced off at a time when there was a large influx of visitors during an ongoing health crisis and the need for social distancing in the ‘new normality’.

‘The town hall regrets not having such an emblematic promenade ready in time for the summer and asks for people’s understanding; it was unavoidable in the face of the Covid-19 emergency and in legal compliance with contract law.”
