Beach open; book ahead

- By Jack Troughton

BENITACHELL’S beautiful cove La Cala del Moraig opened to capacity crowds last weekend with controlled access to ensure social distancing.

The cove has a capacity of 400 people and visitors will be required to book their place in advance using the ‘AparcarE’ app being employed across Alicante and after testing, due to come on stream this week.

Hundreds of people enjoyed the beach as it reopened with access on foot and a security team controlling numbers; the regional government is also reinforcing the town hall workers by supplying four beach assistants.

In addition, access to the popular neighbouring coves of Cala dels Testos and Llebeig is also being controlled: minors must be accompanied by an adult and all must wear appropriate footwear when negotiating rocks and paths - the measures were brought in after a number of rescues had to be mounted in recent years because people were not aware of the challenging terrain.

People enjoying the beach are asked to follow Covid-19 safety rules: stay home if they have symptoms; maintain a 2m distance from others or wear a face mask; do not drop cigarette butts and remove all litter; wear beach footwear to avoid contact with surfaces; wash hands after touching areas common to visitors; and avoid touching the mouth, nose or eyes until hands have been washed.

Benitachell town hall has appealed for visitors to follow the instructions and advice displayed in the area:

“La Cala del Moraig is an environmental treasure and we all have to take good care of it to continue enjoying this space for many years to come.”

Work to repair the damage caused by January’s devastating Storm Gloria was suspended ahead of the cove being reopened; it will be resumed on September 1.
