Charity helps bridge schooling gap

- By Jack Troughton

CATHOLIC Church charity Cáritas is supporting summer schooling for 30 youngsters in Jávea to help them catch up on learning lost through the coronavirus pandemic.

The six to 12-year-olds live in the Parish of Nuestra Señora de Loreto in Jávea port - widely known as the fisherman’s church - and have had little or no access to online teaching during the health crisis.

Backed by the Caixa Bank's La Caixa foundation - which supports projects fighting child poverty and social exclusion the charity plans to help prepare the students for September’s planned return to school.

The nationwide charity Cáritas Española has published data indicating that children in one in every three homes have experienced difficulties continuing their education from home due to not having the required devices, internet connection problems, and personal difficulties.

It claims more than 200,000 people living in 14% of homes supported by the charity do not have an internet connection almost half were unable to take advantage of the administrative procedures to access home teaching.

Cáritas in Jávea port will facilitate learning as well as monitoring the health and wellbeing of the students, and aims to ensure their social integration by helping the students ‘self development’ through non-formal education.

Youngsters will be incorporated into 'bubbles' of no more than 10, including teachers and staff. Once incorporated into a group, each member will only be allowed to take part in activities within their collective.

All Covid-19 health measures will be in place, including hand hygiene, use of face masks, social distancing, and the disinfecting and ventilation of the accommodation used by the project.

Families will be informed of the arrangements and asked for a report on their child’s health over the 14 days before the start of the summer school in order to help prevent any possible spread of the virus.
