Teulada-Moraira Fishing Club

-

On Wednesday July 1 the forecast was for temperatures to reach 40 degrees with an amber warning for the heat. As it turned out, due to a pleasant breeze which sprang up during the morning, the day was quite pleasant. Most of those who went fished section B again.

As the water is now very warm, some members persevered with 'up in the water' tactics, which have not proved successful for almost a year. I am pleased to report that both Vic Wills and Ray Craig enjoyed some considerable success on this day. Whilst not all their fish were taken by this method, they had four or five each up in the water and several by fishing on the bottom. Again, all members had an enjoyable and reasonably successful day.

One or two members decided to try fishing the 'cemetery' sections, E and F this week. Lawrence Drain fished E section on two occasions and had two good days. During a quiet period, as Lawrence ate his sandwiches, he flicked a few pieces of bread onto the water, though this is hardly ever used as bait on the Jucar. He was surprised to see a number of carp come up and take the bread at the surface. Needless to say he quickly fixed a small a piece of bread to his hook and cast out. He was rewarded with a take almost immediately and landed the fish which he reported was the smallest of the shoal. (Fisherman’s tales!)

Frank Povey and Graham Sewell delayed their fishing trip until Friday, which was forecast to be considerably cooler but with a chance of rain. Although it rained in the Moraira area they remained dry on the Jucar. They decided to fish F section.

As the far bank on this section is lined with bamboo, this is normally the target area, fishing as close as possible to the canes. After a quiet start Frank was first to hook a fish. When a fish is hooked so close to the 'snaggy' canes it is a matter of hanging on to prevent the fish diving for cover. Frank was successful in keeping out and was rewarded with a good sized fish. Graham then landed a couple of smaller fish, but both were experiencing tiny knocks which they put down to crayfish as, when they retrieved their bait, small pieces had been nibbled away. They were soon to discover that it was in fact terrapins as first Graham, and then Frank, pulled one in.

The terrapins continued to be first to the bait making it almost impossible to fish the favoured area so both began to try different distances. Graham had some success fishing just beyond half way across the river but the fish were only moderate in size.

Frank tried fishing further upstream and about four metres short of the far bank. In both these areas he hooked good fish but each time he was either snagged or snapped. In utter frustration he cast only three or four metres in front of himself. He immediately had a strong take only to snap again. On his second cast he had another incredible take. The fish stripped thirty metres of line from his reel in a few seconds, covering the full width of the river in this time and diving straight into the bamboo where he lost it. That was enough for Frank for that day. Very exciting but very frustrating. Graham had continued to take fish from the middle, ending up with eight fish.

We are a very friendly club and are always happy to welcome new members. Anyone without match fishing experience will be given assistance and advice from our more experienced members.
