A STUDY carried out for the Valencia government has found that a very high percentage of residents are taking the basic precautions advised to prevent catching the coronavirus.

The figures produced by the Data Science for Covid-19 work group showed that 90% of the population were ‘frequently disinfecting their hands’ and 85% used a face mask ‘habitually’. At the same time 83% of people in the region ‘avoid situations which could lead to meeting with large numbers of people’.

The study also found that the traditions of shaking hands, kissing cheeks and hugging people who are not in the family group have been shunned by 75% of the population.

Director general of analysis and public policy, Ana Berenguer said: “Our citizens set an example during the hardest days of confinement and they are doing so again now by complying with these prevention measures.

“We cannot let our guard down because the virus is still here and it is fundamental that we all collaborate to keep it under control.

“This means following the guidelines on washing hands, social distancing, use of the face mask and keeping premises and houses ventilated.”

A total of 3,178 residents in the Valencia region were questioned for this latest round of the survey, which is being led by celebrated scientist Nuria Oliver and teams from the universities of Valencia, Alicante and Elche’s Miguel Hernández.

It was carried out between June 26 and July 2.

Only 20% of the people questioned said they were using public transport, preferring their own car (71%) or walking (55%).

A total of 8% reported that they were using a bicycle or an electric scooter.
