Number of ‘active cases’ doubles in the last week

AFTER figures showed that people aged 20-40 accounted for 45% of new cases of Covid-19 recorded over the weekend in the Valencia region, councillor for health Ana Barceló stated that ‘all citizens have to take responsibility so that we have the fewest possible cases’.

Sr Barceló stated: “We will only achieve this if people follow the guidelines on personal hygiene, social distancing and the use of face masks.”

The number of ‘active cases’ of coronavirus in the Valencia region has shot up over the last two weeks. The figure now stands at 1,130 – up from 546 at the same time last week and 299 on July 15.

On Wednesday councillor for health Ana Barceló noted that 114 more people had tested positive in the Valencia region in the previous 24 hours.

Of these, four were in Castellón

province, 54 in Alicante province and 54 in Valencia province, with two not yet assigned. The number of patients being treated in hospital has gone up from 59 last week to 86 on Wednesday (19 in Alicante province).

Of these, eight are in intensive care units, which is one less than last week (three in Alicante and five in Valencia).

One person has died in the last week from the virus.

Local flare-ups

The mayor of Elche warned of the risk of a worsening situation after 92 cases were reported over the two weeks from July 13-27 in the city, 41 of them just last weekend.

Carlos González said these were typically people under 40 with mild symptoms, who have not required hospitalisation, and were mostly related to gatherings of family and friends in private homes.

The outbreak in Gandía now numbers some 158 cases, with 44 new positive tests confirmed on Wednesday in the previous 24 hours.

Another 10 cases have been reported in Oliva and the town hall is now taking stringent protection measures among council workers after an employee tested positive.

They have urged the regional government to close or reduce opening hours in nightspots, including beach bars

The regional health service flagged up five new cases in Almoradí over the last fortnight, which mayoress María Gómez said they know from local police monitoring were not connected to a single outbreak and more likely from visiting family in other municipalities.

A flare-up in Orihuela ‘connected to the workplace’ now numbers five cases after two more were reported on Wednesday. According to long range figures, a total of 22 new cases have been reported in Torrevieja over the last 14 days, although the regional government has not confirmed any specific outbreak in the municipality.

In Benidorm 19 new cases have come to light over the last two weeks.

Five positive cases have been detected in Alfaz del Pi. All those are isolating at home and being monitored, according to local health councillor Marisa Cortés. A case was confirmed on Friday in Calpe, and another in Dénia on Tuesday, although the Marina Alta continues to have one of the lowest coronavirus rates in the region.
