- By Alex Watkins

COSTA councils have announced closures to crack down on coronavirus flareups.

On Tuesday Almoradí mayoress María Gómez said they were cancelling all cultural and recreational activities the town hall has planned for the rest of the summer.

The number of stalls at the Saturday market is also being reduced and security there is being stepped up.

Having already closed all children’s playgrounds as it was ‘impossible’ to monitor the 75% capacity restriction, cleaning and disinfection of all parks and public spaces has been intensified, and the municipality would be completely disinfected at the end of this week, she said.

Almost simultaneously, Benijófar town hall announced that it was closing El Soto recreational area, the skate park and callisthenics equipment there, and the children’s playground and exercise equipment in the Cañada Marsa park.

Algorfa town hall also disinfected the streets of the municipality this week, as did Catral.

On Thursday, Orihuela and Crevillente temporarily closed their children’s playgrounds to avoid the risk of contagion, also citing the impossibility of enforcing social distancing and capacity limits. An Orihuela town hall spokeswoman said users had been seen not wearing masks or keeping 1.5m apart from each other.

Callosa de Segura has cancelled its fiesta events apart from the ‘Subida del farolico’ procession to the San Roque sanctuary on August 5, as a tribute to Covid-19 victims.
