- By Alex Watkins awatkins@cbnews.es

A SUSPECTED gang of drug dealers with bases in Guardamar del Segura, Novelda and Madrid has been rounded up by the Guardia Civil.

A total of 14 people were arrested, who have all been remanded in custody by a court in Torrevieja until their trial, explained a spokesman for the force. Officers in Guardamar had been investigating a gang of cocaine dealers since the death of a drug addict there in February.

These suspects turned out to be supplied by a second group in Novelda, and the investigation discovered that both groups had arranged to buy a kilogram of cocaine from a third group in Madrid.

The handover was due to take place on July 20 in a popular area of Alicante city.

Surveillance of the rendezvous resulted in the arrests of seven people and confiscation of 1kg of white powder and €30,000 in cash. On the same day, the Guardia Civil arrested two more people – in Monóvar and Novelda – and on the following day another five people in Guardamar.

Officers searched five homes and seized just over half a kilo of white powder and rocks, various paraphernalia for preparing and selling drugs, four vehicles, 16 mobile phones, €35,000 in cash, and another €53,000 by blocking four bank accounts.

The male suspects are two Colombians, aged 26 and 35, a Romanian (36), two Italians (67 and 48), two Moroccans (45 and 30), and four Spaniards (44, 45, 33 and 47), as well as three Romanian women (37, 46 and 28). The spokesman said this operation had not only disbanded an organised crime gang, but also shut down several places being used to adulterate, distribute and store drugs.
