- By Jack Troughton

TRAINS pulled into Teulada station on Friday for the first time in four years when this section of the railway between Benidorm and Dénia reopened as part of a €130 million modernisation programme.

The latest section of Line 9 of the TRAM to re-enter service, following €17 million of work, it runs the 11km from Calpe to Teulada - with a replacement bus service connecting passengers heading for stations north on the way to the terminus at Dénia.

Improvements to the line between the station at Gata de Gorgos and Dénia are already underway and later this month work will begin on the track between Teulada and Gata - the two sections have a planned budget of €34.

And work is already underway lowering platforms at all the stations on

Line 9 ready for the introduction of new rolling stock; the regional government of Valencia has invested €45 million on six state-of-the-art two-carriage trains.

Work by FGV - the regional givernment public rail company - will also improve accessibility to stations, and modernisation has also included work on signalling, communication and the power supply.

Regional councillor for territorial policy, public works and mobility, Arcadi España said reopening the railway between Calpe and Teulada also involved work on the bridge at Ferrandet and the viaduct across the Quisi ravine.

“The government is carrying out a number of different actions on this line to complete its comprehensive renovation and modernisation,” said the councillor.

“To date, more than €130 million has been invested or allocated to recover the railway services between Benidorm and Dénia, and to achieve quality standards that are comparable to the rest of the network in Alicante province.”
