Covid-19 figures soar - but mortality drops

- By James Parkes jparkes@cbnews.es

SPAIN'S official new coronavirus case count surpassed 300,000 this week as testing increased due to over 500 reported flare-ups nationwide.

The number of cases is currently at 72.23 per 100,000 people - a figure that is 13 times higher than that reported in the UK.

Until yesterday afternoon, the number of cases detected in Spain was of 305,767 and 28,499 had officially died due to Covid-19.

The mortality rate has dropped significantly as the majority of new cases are being detected among young people and early detection in older age groups is allowing more rapid treatment, thus preventing the collapse of the health system reported in March and April throughout Spain.

Local lockdowns and restrictions are being imposed in areas where flare-ups are being reported.

A judge has authorised the complete isolation of Aranda de Duero in Burgos due to the high rate of 'community' contagion.

In Lérida, where restrictions over recent weeks have been eased, bars and restaurants can only use outside tables.

Belgium has now listed Madrid and the Balearics alongside Girona, Tarragona, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Extremadura, Soria, Guadalajara, Castellón, Valencia, Murcia and Almería as areas where travellers will be requested to self-isolate on return.

Germany has now ordered compulsory Covid-19 tests on all passengers returning from Cataluña, Aragón and Navarra regions.

Second wave in the Basque Country

The increasing number of cases in the Basque Country has led the regional government to be the first one in Spain to say the 'second wave' of the virus has hit the area.

On Wednesday 338 of the 5,617 tests carried out in the region gave a positive result for Covid-19. Other regions are getting tough on companies and establishments ignoring the restrictions and some breaking specific closure orders. Such was the case of a restaurant in Comillas (Santander), where a flare-up was reported among the family that owned the establishment.

Despite an order to remain closed, the regional government has now started legal action against the restaurant for opening despite the order.
