Flare-ups continue in the region

THE VALENCIA region recorded 271 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday and 358 recoveries – allowing for a reduction in the overall figure for the first time during August.

THE VALENCIA region recorded 271 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday and 358 recoveries – allowing for a reduction in the overall figure for the first time during August.

However, the number of active cases remains high and now stands at 2,533 – up from 1,871 at the same time last week and just 299 on July 15.

Councillor for health Ana Barceló noted that 12 of the cases reported on Wednesday were in Castellón province, 89 in Alicante province and 170 in Valencia province.

The number of coronaviru­s patients being treated in hospital is still rising – up from 136 last Wednesday to 185 this week (50 in Alicante province).

Of these 19 are in intensive care – 12 in Valencia province and seven in Alicante province – up from 10 last week.

The death toll from the virus in the Valencia region has gone up by five in the last week to 1,486.

Covid-19 has now returned to 18 care homes for the elderly in the region, nine of these in Alicante province.

Elche has become one of the main zones of contagion in Alicante province with 217 cases reported in the last two weeks.

Other large towns have fared better with 29 new cases in Torrevieja in two weeks, Orihuela 29 and Benidorm 18.

New flare-ups were reported on Wednesday in Callosa de Segura (seven cases) and Albatera (five cases), both originatin­g from ‘social contact’.

A small outbreak was reported in Dénia on Tuesday with three cases of social origin.

The Marina Alta reported 35 cases over weekend, with six positives in Sagra – all part of the same family, with five of them isolating at home whilst a 38-year-old man is in intensive care, but reportedly responding well to treatment.

Jávea has been coronaviru­s-free since the end of lockdown, but at the weekend, three residents tested positive.

One of these is an employee in a perfumery in the town centre, which has been temporaril­y shut down.

In the last two weeks, a total of 45 cases were detected in La Safor – one each in La Font d'En Carròs, Simat de la Valldigna, Ròtova, and Daimús, 33 in Gandia, four in Miramar, two each in Oliva and Tavernes de la Valldigna – although the fatality rate remains unchanged.

Sra Barceló noted that that 67% of the 629 new Covid-19 patients reported over the weekend were asymptomat­ic – meaning they have or show no symptoms of the infection.
