Help sought to fight fires

- By Jack Troughton jtroughton@cbnews.es

VOLUNTEERS are needed to join the volunteer crew of Jávea firefighters, ISVH Voluntaros Balcón al Mar - the town’s only dedicated brigade with almost 40 years' experience.

The existing crew helps to protect the environment, supports the community - and joins professional services in an emergency.

During the summer, the group patrols the local area and mounts a seasonal forest fire watch; frequently the volunteers are first on the scene and can prevent an outbreak from becoming a major wildfire.

And during the worst blazes in recent years - the major forest blazes of La Plana in 2014 and La Granadella two years later in 2016 the volunteers played a valuable part in fighting fires, protecting property and evacuating residents.

The brigade has also played a full role in other emergency situations, such as flooding and other severe weather incidents.

Volunteers are expected to attend training sessions on alternate Wednesdays (there are two a month) and respond to emergency situations, as well as to support fundraising and community events.

They should hold a full driving licence and have a reasonable command of English; other languages are seen as an advantage.

The group prefers its volunteers to live within 5km of the fire station in Carrer George Frederick Handel in the Balcón al Mar area.
