Scrabble challenge

- By Christine Watkins of Almoradí Scrabble Club

IF, like me, you’ve always got a project on the go, building on comes as no surprise. And so it is with Scrabble. If you can attach a word to another or even others, you can score quite highly.

You will see that I was able to build onto the previous seven-letter word, LIMBERS, with a

C to make the word CLIMBERS. Also I was able to make the word SAC into the bargain giving me 57 points. But then I had to change twice.

Now I have an interesting set of tiles - including a Q. I used to dread picking up a Q but now find it a challenge.

So what word do you think I should lay?

Talking of Q words, I said I would give you more words that don't require a U, so here are a few more: QAPIK, QORMA, QANAT, TALAQ, TRANQ.

Many of you would have come across QORMA (aka Korma) before. TALAQ was one I learnt a few years back. Presumably TRANQ is another abbreviation for tranquility. But who knows?

Let’s hope you will be able to use some of the Q words that I have listed in your game.

If you are looking for a game, our next Almoradí Scrabble Club afternoon is Tuesday, August 25. For details contact Christine on 694 427 698.

HELP to clean the clean and disinfect the 11 beaches along the coast of Orihuela is being provided by workers from the special employment centre (CEE) of ADIS, the association for differently abled people.

They were asked to cover this indispensable service over the weekends at the height of summer by the councillor for beaches, Ramón López Cabrera.

A total of five labourers and two supervisors were appointed to work morning and afternoon shifts at weekends from August 8 until September 15.

The council needed assistance in order to comply with the health measures established as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, while the beaches are at their busiest, so that their quality and services can be guaranteed for visitors.

The ADIS team duties include cleaning and disinfecting the wooden walkways and the foot washing taps, tasks which the councillor said were vital to offer maximum hygiene.

ADIS president Lourdes Pérez assured that the CEE workers are overqualified to do this and she thanked Sr López for giving these differently abled people the chance to integrate in a workplace.

CEE workers from the association have previously and currently performed maintenance on various municipal green spaces for local authorities around the Vega Baja area, amongst other services.
