- By Dave Jones djones@cbnews.es

FOLLOWING the high temperatures of yesterday (Thursday) when Alicante province was on yellow alert for heat, the mercury is set drop over the weekend – and there could even be some rain.

The ‘relief ’ will be felt most in inland areas of Alicante, according to state weather agency AEMET.

Orihuela is set to record a high of 36°C today (Friday) which is forecasted to fall to 28°C on Sunday, while Alcoy will drop from 35°C to 26°C in 48 hours.

On the coast the benefits of the colder weather arriving from the north will be tempered by the hot Mediterranean Sea, according to Alicante university climatology lab.

Torrevieja’s high of 31°C on Friday is set to drop to 27°C on

Sunday and Benidorm’s will fall from 29°C to 26°C.

Mercifully, the nights will also become cooler, according to AEMET, with a low of 19°C in Benidorm on Sunday and 20°C in Torrevieja.

The cooler weather is set to continue into September, according to AEMET, with highs only reaching 28°C in Torrevieja on Wednesday and 27°C in Benidorm.

AEMET is also giving a high possibility of rain showers on Saturday and Sunday in Alicante province.

Alicante university noted that the change in the weather is due a ‘spectacular undulation’ of the jet stream which will bring cold air from the arctic.

They explained that this will lead to snow falling in the Pyrenees and possible heavy rainfall in Cataluña.

Their meteorologist Samuel Biener stated that Alicante province would not be in the ‘sector with the largest degree of instability’ and there would not be a channel of humid air arriving from the Mediterranean.

Despite this, ‘especially on Saturday, we could see some storms in the Valencia region and Murcia’.
