Terra Natura Benidorm presents new bird of prey flight display

- By Shelley Liddell

TERRA Natura safari park in Benidorm has presented a new educational display with birds of prey.

It is aimed at raising awareness about conservation of these species, which benefit the biodiversity of ecosystems and help with pest control.

The birds have started training for this activity in the amphitheatre, located in the Asia area of the park.

During these sessions, information is shared on the art of falconry, knowledge about various flight techniques, curiosities about the species and the conservation threats they suffer.

Some of the birds participating in the display come from wildlife rescue centres and cannot be reintroduced into their natural habitats, so Terra Natura Benidorm is in charge of their care and facilitating their socialisation through contact with other birds.

The displays will incorporthe ate a crested seriema, the only land predatory bird participating in this environmental awareness activity. These birds give loud yelping calls that can be heard by other members of their family several kilometres away.

Another of the birds that can be observed will be the Rüppell's vulture, considered to be the world’s highest flying bird. Visitors can also admire flight of the common buzzard, which feeds mainly on mammals although it complements its diet with small reptiles and birds, as well as insects and worms.

Strix owls, crows, barn owls, other owls of various subspecies, Harris's hawk, black kite, steppe eagle and white stork complete the variety of birds of prey that visitors can see in action.
