Paula Morcillo from Alfaz is Spain’s new junior clay pigeon shooting champion
Alfaz del Pi markswoman Paula Morcillo Sempere obtained a new triumph last weekend in Granada by proclaiming herself Spanish Junior Olympic Shooting Champion ( clay pigeon). Paula entered the final with 109 out of 125 targets, a result that has also earned her a spot on the Spanish
Olympic shooting team.
The Spanish Clay Pigeon Shooting Championship was held on August 29 at the Las Gabias Olympic Pit, in Granada. This tournament brought together nearly fifty of the best sharpshooters between 14 and 26 years of age in all of Spain, who competed in the categories Young shooter ( 1416 years), Junior ( 1621 years) and Young Promises ( 21 26 years).
16yearold Paula had an extraordinary championship, winning her category and qualifying for the grand final along with five other shooters. She was fourth in the global ranking, ahead of athletes with much more experience and age.
Óscar Pérez, Alfaz sports councillor, wanted to congratulate Paula “for her talent, her effort and her tenacity” and express “the appreciation of all the people of Alfaz del Pi”. "A brilliant young woman for whom we predict a promising future in the world of Olympic shooting," he added.
Paula Morcillo started in the world of Olympic shooting when she was only 15 years old. It was in July 2019 when she joined Alfaz Clay Pigeon Shooting Club and began training. The club soon recognised her talent and she debuted in her first championship.
Thus, in her first competition, Paula was proclaimed runnerup in Spain’s TRAP 5 Olympic Shooting championship, in the junior category, after participating in an official competition held in Cheste. Thanks to this magnificent result, she managed to make the Valencian Olympic shooting team
In September 2019 she participated in the TRAP5 Olympic Shooting World Championship,
in which the best shooters in the world of this modality took part. Paula surprised again by getting a ninth place. Currently, she leads the regional ranking in the junior female category and is fourth in the national ranking.
