A MAN from Sax has been fined for ill- treating a German Shepherd, and a Labrador Retriever was freed from an illegal trap in a Pinoso hunting ground. Both dogs were facing certain death.

Monóvar’s Guardia Civil environmental service ( Seprona), in collaboration with Sax local police have carried out an investigation into a crime of animal abuse. Local police were alerted by residents to the plight of a German Shepherd bitch entangled in the chain her owner had tied her up for days on end, with no access to food, water or shade to escape the recent high temperatures.

Seprona officers were informed and the dog was rescued and taken to a veterinary clinic, where she is recovering from her ordeal after coming very close to death from dehydration. After making various enquiries, officers arrested the dog's owner, a 51- year- old Spanish man, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals.

Trapped in Pinoso

The other canine rescue was launched after a resident walking in Partida El Salobrar in Pinoso found a Labrador Retriever captured in a trap- cage and contacted Pinoso Guardia Civil.

Officers from Seprona in Ibi were were called in, as Pinoso had no spare agents available, to free him. The Labrador was microchipped and was able to be swiftly reunited with his delighted owner, who told officers he had been searching for him for two days.

The contraption in which he was found consisted of a cage, with a trap door, containing two compartments, from which the victim is unable to escape. The trap is usually used to catch vermin. Officers removed the trap and turned it over to the regional department of environment

The Guardia Civil are continuing their investigations as the use of this type of trap is illegal. The alleged perpetrators, who are hunters, will be charged with using illegal traps, which carries a fine ranging from € 301 to € 3,000. They also face the possibility of having their hunting licenses revoked for a period of up to two years..

Once again, the collaboration of citizens has been crucial in saving the lives of two pets, who would have died slow and painful deaths.
