27th Alfaz Fantasy Football League

- By Eric Malpus

Week 1

The 27th Alfaz Fantasy Football League got off to a slow start with only six Premier League games contributing to this week's points due to the fact that the two Manchester clubs were involved in European games and also there were two games to be played on Monday night. However the half a dozen games did manage to produce a total of 17 goals, five clean sheets, 14 yellow cards, and no red ones, although referee Jonathan Moss did have his decision to send off Southampton's Walker- Peters overturned by VAR after being advised to look at the pitch side monitor. Not often do I praise VAR but in this case, well done. Eleven of our Fantasy managers breathed a sigh of relief who had selected the former Spurs player.

There were not many points up for grabs in the first week of the Fantasy with the average score only reaching just 16 points. Our lady managers have dominated the opening week with four of the top six places being occupied by them. Fortunately, for the lads Simon's team My Canaries Gone is holding them all off at the summit with a slight 2 point advantage over Hazel's El Sid F. C. Carol's Sky Blues are in 3rd place just ahead of Catherine's Pompey Hammers and Jackie's Winchester United. Down at the bottom, Liz's team Leia's Yum Yums suffered like a lot of other teams with the two Manchester teams not playing and they finished up with a minus one.

Hazel's El Sid F. C. are the early front- runners in our Mark Carter Ladies Section with a slim 2 point lead over Carol's Sky Blues. Catherine's Pompey Hammers, who slipped up last season in the final run in have started well and are in 3rd slot 2 points in front of Jackie's Winchester United. Down at the foot of the table, Liz's Leia's Yum Yums trail Rachel's Blue Murder by 2 points.

Last season's champions in our Junior League, Harley's Ginger Ninja have started off where they left off at the top of the League. At the moment they have a slight fragile 4 point gap over Jack's team Balotellitubbies. Two teams share 3rd place, Baily's Bez Boys & William and Henry both on 17 points, five behind the leaders.

At the opposite end of the table, William & Henry Two are 5 points adrift off Robbie's Alisson Wonderland.

Two of the Premier League top strikers Leicester City's Jamie Vardy and Liverpool's Mo Salah started the season off with a bang by knocking in five goals between them which helped to give Simon's team My Canaries Gone a great start to their Golden Boot chances this season. They have opened a reasonable 7 point advantage over three teams in joint 3nd place Jackie's Winchester United, Jack's Winners and Hazel's El Sid F. C. Down in the Basement we have 47 teams all on zero, so I don't think we will go there!

It will take a couple of weeks to get our Mini- League sorted out so don't panic Mr Mannering.

This season we have over 150 teams competing for our very prestigious A. F. F. L. trophy which is a little less than usual but with he present coronavirus circumstances we can't complain. So, Fantasy League managers fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the rollercoaster ride of the Premier League and the 27th A. F. F. L.
