Valencia regional president Ximo Puig set to ask for measure which would see people ordered to remain at home between midnight and 06.00.

TRADE unions reported yesterday ( Thursday) that regional president Ximo Puig is set to ask the national government for a curfew which would see people ordered to remain in their homes between midnight and 06.00.

Union leaders were commenting on the content of their meeting with Sr Puig that morning as Costa

Blanca News went to press yesterday.

They said he had told them that the regional government intends to introduce the measure as soon as possible in order to crack down on recent rises in Covid- 19 infections.

This would be when there was ‘ legal cover’.

Union leaders agreed that it was the ‘ best possible measure in the current situation’ as it would allow most workers to continue as normal in their employment.

According to the unions, it would run until December 9 ‘ in order to preserve the Christmas commercial season’.

Costa Blanca News understands that Sr Puig was set to meet with opposition leaders yesterday afternoon to inform them of his decision. The measure was being discussed at a meeting of health councillors from all Spain’s regions with minister for health Salvador Illa yesterday afternoon.

CCOO union leader Arturo León said that although the Valencia region has some of the lowest coronavirus figures in the country, ‘ we should not wait for the figures to become bad, which would require more drastic measures to be brought in’.

The measure has already been introduced by the French government in Paris and other cities.

The curfew – aimed at curbing the soaring coronavirus infection rate in France – runs from 21.00 to 06.00 every night.
