In the pink against breast cancer
TOWN halls in Alicante province and the wider Valencia region marked the World Health Organisation’s ( WHO) international day against breast cancer on Monday.
On the same day the Ribera Salud healthcare company, which operates concessions in the Torrevieja and Elche areas, noted that their ‘ revolutionary’ 3D scanner that is now operating in Vinalopó ( Elche) hospital allows them to detect lesions which do not show up on a normal mammogram.
It is on October 19 that the WHO aims to raise awareness and promote woman’s access to timely and effective controls, diagnoses and treatments. On the Costa Blanca, La Nucía council lit up the town hall, church and sports stadium in pink floodlights in
commemoration on Monday – and continued to do so throughout the week.
However, due to Covid- 19, the traditional ‘ human ribbon
for life’, jointly organised by the AECC La Nucía branch and Anèmona Marina Baixa, was cancelled this year.
In Orihuela the local authority installed pink ribbons on the town hall façade.
They also lit up La Lonja auditorium in pink ‘ in a sign of support for all women who are suffering from this illness’.
Councillors also joined in ‘ symbolic acts’ to support the AECC association which provides help and advice for cancer sufferers.
Ribera Salud noted that their scanner in Elche is able to detect 30% more tumours.
A spokesman explained they produce 3D mammograms that can view tumours measuring just 4mm in length.
Head of breast care at the company, Julia Camps said the technology was very similar to that of magnetic resonance.
“We are giving women who have already suffered breast cancer maximum guarantees that a new lesion does not affect them,” she said.
