Revealing ancient Roman remains
NEW audio- visual material has been installed to bring the ancient Roman site of Portus Ilicitanus in Santa Pola to life for visitors, announced the town hall.
Co- financed with EU FEDER funds, the project to showcase the site covers only a small proportion of the land that used to be occupied by the town, a council spokeswoman explained. The site was discovered by chance in 1982 when a residential development was being built, and it has been partially excavated over the intervening decades.
The latest project has involved excavating some of the key areas that were yet to be explored in order to make sense of the exposed complex, consolidate what had already been excavated and create a
museum for the public.
To make it more accessible, in addition to installing explanatory signs and walkways around the remains, an augmented reality application has been developed for the Roman house.
In order to publicise the project, a page has been set up within the website of the local tourism department, with sev
eral videos featuring important researchers, including Alicante university professor Jaime Molina and doctor of ancient history Juan Francisco Álavarez.
hey explain aspects of Portus Ilicitanus’ connection with Ilici ( ancient Roman Elche), specific characteristics of the site, and the work done on the Roman house and the port neighbourhood.
This project has required collaboration between the town hall, regional government, EU and Alicante university, as well as participants in the research, conservation and publicising of this valuable resource for tourism and culture, added the spokeswoman.
