Safe and successful meeting

- By David Stockton

CALPE U3A's General Meeting took place at the Salon Blau culture centre on Thursday, October 15, the first meeting since Feburary. With 31 members signed in, nine renewals and four new members, there are now 672 active members.

We had a talk from Pedro of Calpe Red Cross who brought three female members of the team with him. Christina, Alba and Laura. Pedro outlined the services that our local Red Cross can offer for those in need: the emergency RED button, help with mobility aids and the loan of crutches.

They are also requesting unwrapped Christmas toys for the children of families in need due to the effects of the Covid- 19 pandemic.

Pedro asked for questions from the floor, one being about the use of defibrillators. It was explained that the Red Cross give training in the use of defibrillators to members of the public and volunteers. The Red Cross are all very positive about their work and are keen to liaise closely with Calpe U3A.

Our vice- president Wendy Down stood in for president Verity Waddell who had to return to England due to the failing health of her father.

We then had information from the group leaders and the treasurer advising we are solvent. Sports activities were the first groups to begin after lock down, they are now in full swing and congratulations to the Calpe U3A padel group who had a big win against Moraira padel group- an overwhelming win 28- 8.

We also had an interesting talk by Liam McKervey who gave us an insight into his past experiences in the nursing profession, his job as a manager of nursing homes and his work in social services. Liam told us of the phone call at 03.00; he was to come to the home ASAP as the chef had won a cow in a card game and it was in the kitchen! When Liam got there it was a horse not a cow! So he had to arrange for the horse to be taken to a nearby farm. The kitchen had to have a deep clean!

Liam has put his name forward to take over the role of president of

Calpe U3A at the November AGM. The AGM will be on Thursday, November 19 and will be held in the Salon Blau culture centre. Doors open at 10.00 for admin. The meeting will commence at 11.00.

The next J. U. G. S. ( Just Us Girls) lunch will take place on the Thursday, November 5 at Café Playa Restaurant. For more details contact Anita Sanchez on tinka. tinkabel@ yahoo. com
