Championship Finals

SO finally, seven months after our first Club Championship Finals day, the second day gets completed. This Covid lockdown has made life difficult for us all, but our finalists were not to be denied their day in the spotlight and between them they entertained the crowd with some great bowling.

The drawn Aussie pairs promised to be a close encounter, but Jan Phillips and Chris Salter surprisingly dominated the match from the first end to record a 25 – 8 win, against Vee Wood and Tony Walker.

The ladies singles match was also expected to be a close affair, but on the day Dee Hamilton outplayed Gail Cleaver, to claim her first title in this discipline.

The vets' singles and the gents singles were both fabulous matches and both went to 27 ends before the victors were known. In the vets' singles John Coates was only leading in one end of the first 21 ends, but then took a 1716 lead and finally claimed the title 2118 over a valiant Dave Gardiner.

In the gents' singles Derek

Eldon played against his good friend Jack Wardrop and both players played the match with a smile on their faces. This happy mood was reflected in the quality of bowls they served up, and in contrast to the vets' singles the lead exchanged hands 10 times! There were never more than three shots between the two of them and they went into the last end at 20- 20, before Derek finally won the match.

At the presentation, Alan Phillips welcomed Andrew Turner of Turner Insurance, who sponsored our Club Championships and presented the prizes and trophies. Derek Eldon then thanked Jan and Alan for their hard work in providing Jávea’s members with a great competition.
