HOPE AS COVID CASES GO DOWN
Fewer new infections in Valencia region but deaths hit record high
A RAY of hope emerged on Wednesday in the Valencia region’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
For the first time this year the number of active cases has fallen over a seven-day period.
On Wednesday the regional health authority reported that 67,243 people were registered as having coronavirus in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón, which was down from 72,036 on Wednesday, January 27. Regional health councillor Ana Barceló noted that 5,256 new cases had been registered around the region on Wednesday, with 8,330 patients deemed to have made recoveries from the virus.
Alicante province recorded the most cases once again – 2,463; with 2,403 from Valencia province and 390 from Castellón. Despite the improvement region-wide, the largest number of deaths from Covid19 in the three provinces in a 24-hour period was reported by Sra Barceló on Wednesday – a total of 112. The high incidence of Covid-19 has led Valencia to bring in additional measures to halt the spread -
HOSPITALS around the Valencia region – which have been under intense pressure from the Covid-19 pandemic in recent weeks – have at last enjoyed some relief from the onslaught.
On Wednesday last week (January 27), a total of 4,594 coronavirus patients were being treated on wards in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón – which had been reduced to 4,193 this Wednesday.
However, intensive care units have still not benefited from the reduction in Covid infections, according to the figures supplied by regional health councillor Ana Barceló.
Last week there were 624 coronavirus patients under supervision in ICUs compared with 650 on Wednesday.
In Alicante province a total of 1,641 patients are being treated in hospital, with 244 of them in ICUs (in Valencia province it is 2,126 and 351 respectively).
The regional health department noted on Wednesday that of the 112 people who died from Covid-19 in previous 24 hours, 35 had been living in residential care homes.
On Wednesday they reported
that 147 more care home residents had tested positive for Covid-19 in the
previous 24 hours, with 39 workers. along
