Bid to improve busy town centre street

THIS Monday, Villajoyosa council’s technical department started remodelling Calle Constitución, one of the busiest streets in the municipality.

The work will be carried out in two phases, according to the town hall.

The first will comprise the section between Calle Ciutat de València and Calle Barranquet and the second phase will focus on the segment between Calles Pizarro and Ciutat de València.

Initial remodelling work has a budget of €5,000 and is scheduled to be completed within two weeks.

This first stage will focus on modifying the parking areas, which will change from angle parking to parallel parking.

In addition, the remodelling plan for the street includes the creation of a pedestrian area separated from the road, additional to the existing pavements.

Councillor for technical services, Kiko Carreres explained

that with this project ‘will improve one of the most commercial and busy streets in the municipality, with new spaces for pedestrians and improve circulation of traffic along the street’.

Likewise, the councillor for public safety and traffic, Isabel Perona announced that while the work on Calle Constitución lasts, Calle Colón will be reopened for traffic (it had been redesignated for pedestrian use

only) ‘taking advantage of the absence of hotel and catering terraces on the road due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic’.

“In this way, the circulation of vehicles in the area will be less affected by the works,” explained the councillor.

Residents in the area have been demanding improvements on Calle Constitución for years.
