Calpe U3A entertained by speaker Ian Gunn via Zoom

- By David Stockton

ON Thursday, January 28 at 11.00, a total of 25 Calpe U3A members joined the Zoom talk given by Ian Gunn (pictured below) who in the past has given presentations on the cruise ship circuit along with his wife Catherine.

The talk we were invited to was on the subject of crime. Ian in his working life has been the governor of several prisons and presented a live talk entitled ‘Here comes the failed bank manager’. As Ian is still using this presentation, I am not at liberty to reveal all of the interesting occurrences mentioned.

He told us of the ‘off the cuff’ throwaway remarks that got him in to hot water! For example, the male prisoner who made enquiries to him about trying to avoid paying tax on his interest - Ian, being an exbanker, advised the man to put the money into his wife’s account. There was a long pause, the man said the reason he was here at Her Majesty’s pleasure was because he had murdered his wife! Ian’s granddaughter was amused that a person called Gunn was in charge of a prison called Shotts!

He reminded us the punishment of going to prison was the loss of liberty.

A very interesting talk, well presented with photos.

Some bad news - our General meeting on February 18 is cancelled as the venue is closed to the public. The good news is that renewals and new members do not have to pay as the membership is now free. Download the membership form from the Calpe U3A page and drop it off at Total Postal or hand it to a Calpe U3A member.

Contact Jan Luxton by email at membership@u3acalpe or see the Calpe U3A Facebook page or www.u3acalpe.org for more information.
