Cartagena reforestation
CARTAGENA city hall and the Repsol foundation, with the support of the Murcia regional government have signed an agreement to start reforesting work on 17 hectares of hillside in La Atalaya area, situated to the south of the city.
The project will see a total of 4,800 native trees introduced to the ‘emblematic enclave’, which is known for its historic past, and as being one of the most popular parts of the city for people undertaking sporting activities.
A total of 12 workers from the city, under the direction of Grupo Sylvestris, will plant 3,800 trees including olive, Sabina mora, fig, Aleppo pine, and carob, plus 1,000 cypress.
The project also includes a three-year maintenance plan in order assist their development and conservation.
City hall has installed an irwith rigation system throughout the area, which will help the survival chances of the trees, whose introduction will increase the area’s biodiversity and protect the earth from erosion, in addition to creating mixed environments that have a longerterm resilience.
Regional director general for the environment Fulgencio Perona explained: It is fundamental to maintain and promote public private collaborations that favour actions aimed at conserving and increasing biodiversity in the region of Murcia, and whose benefits are multiple, both for the natural environment and the wellbeing of people, in line the objective of combatting climate change and reducing its consequences on the Spanish Levante (eastern Mediterranean area).”
With this latest initiative, the Repsol foundation will have been involved in the planting of 12,800 trees in and around Cartagena in the last three years.
