Film cycle in abeyance
THE ALFAZ del Pi solidarity film cycle has been suspended until further notice.
The screenings, which take place every Thursday, have now been called off indefinitely.
The decision was taken in line with the new restrictions from the regional government, in order to ‘stop the spread of Covid-19 and a collapse in the health system’.
The town hall culture department, in their role as event organisers, informed that the event ‘will be resumed when the situ- ation stabilises and people will be noti- fied in sufficient time’.
The cycle has found a niche in the ‘cultural landscape of the Marina Baixa’ by screening award-winning films from major festivals, most of the time in their original subtitled version.
The cycle has ‘two fundamental objectives’. Firstly, it is an ongoing event that does not just take place ‘exclusively over a fortnight in July’ – when the official Alfaz del Pi film festival takes place - and maintains a link with the region’s residents throughout the year, offering different types of films that can be rarely seen in conventional cinemas.
Secondly, it fulfils another ‘important social function’ such as promoting the work of NGOs involved in ‘offering
a higher quality of life to the most disadvantaged groups of people’.
Since its founding the festival has donated more than €38,000 to organistions such as Médicos Sin Fronteras, Ayuda en Acción, Amnesty International, Estrellas de Colores, Save the Children, and Aborigen View.
The town hall councillor for culture Manuel Casado, and festival sub-director Javier Pascual, assured the ‘temporary nature of the suspension, and when the health circumstances change, the festival will resume and continue to meet the existing demand’ of filmgoers.
When running, the film cycle takes place at Alfaz culture centre, every Thursday from 20.00.
Admission is by a €3 donation.
