ACTIVE COVID-19 CASES SLASHED

Valencia region manages to bring down spiralling infections

- By Dave Jones

THE STRICT measures brought in by the Valencia government to reduce the high number of Covid-19 infections in the region are bearing fruit.

The active cases in the region have been slashed in the last two weeks. On January 27 a total of 72,036 people were reported to be suffering from the virus, which had been reduced to 43,071 on Wednesday (February 10), according to the health department. However, despite the reduction in infections, the number of deaths from coronavirus remains high.

On Wednesday health department figures showed that 615 people had died from Covid-19 in the last seven days in the Valencia region, with 108 of them passing away in the previous 24 hours.

As Costa Blanca News went to press yesterday (Thursday) evening, regional government chiefs were meeting to decide whether to extend anti-Covid measures. Regional president Ximo Puig was set to give a statement following a meeting of the interdepartmental Covid-19 action committee. Spanish press reported sources in Valencia who claimed that ‘most of the restrictions’ would remain in place until the end of February.

THE PRESSURE on hospitals in the Valencia region exerted by the Covid-19 pandemic is continuing to fall.

On Wednesday last week (February 3) healthcare staff were treating 4,193 people suffering from coronavirus, which had been reduced to 2,995 patients this Wednesday (February 10).

The number of Covid-19 patients requiring treatment in intensive care units is also coming down.

Last Wednesday there were 624 patients in these wards around the Valencia region, which has been reduced to 579.

There were 1,208 Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Alicante province on Wednesday, with 222 of them in intensive care – and in Valencia province the figures were 1,478 and 303 respectively.

On Wednesday the health department reported 3,031 new cases of coronavirus registered in the previous 24 hours in the Valencia region, while 10,994 people were deemed to have made recoveries in the same time period.

A total of 1,172 of the new infections were reported in Alicante province and 1,597 in Valencia province.

Of the 108 new deaths reported on Wednesday from the virus, 36 were in residential care homes.

The regional government reported that 169 care homes in the Valencia region now have active positive cases. A total of 69 of the homes have been placed under ‘vigilance’ by the health department.
