Councils' jab offer

- By Jack Troughton

LOCAL authorities in Alicante province have offered public buildings and their staff to speed up the regional government’s vaccination programme against the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Wednesday the department for health revealed that 204,323 people had received one jab, and 90,675 had received both vaccinations in the Valencia region.

Calpe town hall has made all their buildings and civil servants available to help boost the success of the regional vaccination programme. Mayoress Ana Sala has written to regional president Ximo Puig to offer sports halls, cultural spaces and car parks to allow members of the public to receive jabs in the safest way possible – even without leaving their car.

However, she also made it clear the council would make available any area requested to allow residents to get shots ‘in the shortest time possible’ as the programme progresses.

“It is necessary for the different administrations to cooperate to defeat the pandemic,” she said. “Our priority is that the majority of the population is vaccinated as soon as possible – to help this, we are making all are resources available to the government in Valencia.”

In Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolón made the same offer, adding that he hoped 70% of the town’s population could be vaccinated before the start of the summer. He said the council has public centres which would be ideal places for mass vaccination programmes. He noted that these buildings have adequate access for medical staff and the public.
