Folkfest faces third rescheduling

- By Barry Wright bwright@cbnews.es

FOLKFEST – Murcia’s first festival of folk and popular music was initially due to take place on November 1922, however the pandemic forced the organisers to suspend it until February 18-21.

These dates have now been put back to June 24-27, as the current health regulations would not allow the festival to meet one of its principle objectives of ‘enabling the attendance of people from different municipalities and provinces’.

When it does eventually happen, the event will take place in the annexe of the Victor Villegas auditorium and congress centre in Murcia city.

It will feature concerts by local and national groups, as well as other activities, including workshops, round table discussions, exhibitions, a dance session, and other family oriented musical performances.

The festival has been organised due to the ‘resurgence of folk music in Spain in recent years’, as well as to support Murcian folk music that has been created in the last 20 years, and its promotion at a national and international level.

Another of its objectives is for most of the scheduled activities to be free of charge and open to all audiences.

However, it is hoped that the event will feature performances by some of the country’s most respected folk acts – and these concerts will attract an admission charge, with further details to be released in the coming weeks.

Ticket refunds for the February dates will take place automatically through the channel from where they were purchased.

Due to the fluidity of the situation, it is best to check the festival’s Facebook page, Folkfest Región de Murcia, to keep up to date with the current situation.

Until February 19: Sixth Fotodona photography contest is accepting entries until 14.00 on February 19. The town hall-organised event’s objective is to publicise personal visions of March 8 - International Women’s Day – through images that empower women. Winning entry will receive €300, and a local prize of €200 will also be awarded. Complete rules are available from www.elpoblenoudebenitatxell.com
